Sarcopenia: Use it or Lost it!

💪 Sarcopenia is age-related muscle loss.

The main thing is that we must use it, or we will lose it

If there was a magic pill for health, it would probably be BEANS!

The "Use It or Lose It" Guide

1. Protein Isn’t a Magic Pill

  • The Myth: Many believe just eating more protein (or drinking shakes) builds muscle.

  • The Reality: Without exercise, extra protein does nothing for muscle mass. In fact, animal protein is "acid-forming," which can actually cause the body to pull minerals from muscle and bone to neutralize that acid.

  • The Fix: Focus on plant proteins (beans, lentils, seeds) which are "alkaline-forming" and help protect muscle tissue as we age.

2. Resistance is Mandatory

  • The Goal: Strength training is the only proven way to reverse sarcopenia. Even 90-year-olds have been shown to double their strength in just 8 weeks of lifting.

  • The "Hanging Challenge": Activities like hanging from a bar or using resistance bands engage "functional" muscles that help prevent falls and keep us independent.

  • Consistency: Just 10–15 minutes of resistance work a day is more effective than one long session once a week.

3. The "Anti-Inflammatory" Advantage

  • The Science: Chronic inflammation acts like "rust" on our muscles, breaking them down faster.

  • The Daily Dozen Connection: Foods high in antioxidants (like the berries and greens on your checklist) lower systemic inflammation.

  • The Power of Berries: Specific phytonutrients in berries have been shown to improve muscle signaling and recovery, making your workouts more effective.

You can't eat your way out of muscle loss, but you can eat to support the work you do in the gym. Think of exercise as the 'builder' and plant-based nutrition as the 'high-quality bricks.' You need both to keep the house standing!

Easy Blueberry Muffins

Easy Blueberry Muffins are an easy way to get some fruit (bananas and dates), flax, berry, and grain Daily Dozen Checkmarks with out any added sugar, oil, or salt!

Easy Blueberry Muffins

14 pitted dates
4 ripe bananas
1/4 c ground flaxseed
1/2 c warm water
2 c whole wheat flour
1 Tbsp aluminum-free baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
3 c wild blueberries, tiny, frozen

In large mixing bowl, combine flour and powders. In high-speed blender, combine fruit, flax, and water. Add wet ingredients from blender to dry mixture. Combine only until dry is all wet, careful not to over-mix. Fold in berries. Fill muffin pan. I love silicone bakeware. I make a dozen muffins and then make what's left into "cookies" (you could probably get another 2-3 muffins). Bake at 350 for 60 min.

After you let them cool, muffins come out of silicone pan easily - no need to grease the pan.

BERRY BUZZ
Try to have at least 1/2 cup of berries or 1/4 cup of raisins every day! It'll help your brain stay young and keep those aging free radicals way! Cherries and grapes also count! The darker the better! So for grapes, choose red over green, blackberries over raspberries, dark raisins over golden. More color means more benefit to your body!

Easy Blueberry Muffins are very similar to Chocolate Cake Breakfast Muffins and Smooth and Sweet Banana Bread, and more flavors are coming!

Feel free to share your concoctions here!!!

Super Juice for Athletic and Health Superstars!

Today's post/drink will be helpful to:

a) ATHLETES: beets, for one thing, are amazing for athletic performance!
b) ANYONE who wants an antioxidant/anti-inflammatory punch, and this too is important for athletes!
c) ANYONE who loves BEETS or wants to try BEETS!

This drink is gorgeous! Recipe makes a lot (two 26-ounce servings). I drink one before my run, and another after!

This drink has loads of Dr Greger Daily Dozen check marks too! 1) greens - kale, 2) berries - lots, 3) other veggies - beets, 4) other fruit - orange 5) flax, 6) spices - lots, 7) nuts - chia, 8) water, 9) oats ...and go for the run for #10!

Here is the Daily Dozen that Dr Greger recommends in How Not to Die.

From www.nutritionfacts.org

Magenta Magic Potion

2 beets, raw, quartered, stems removed
1 blood orange, quartered
1 c kale, packes (2 big handfuls)
1 c strawberries
1/2 c blueberries
1/4 c cranberries
1 Tbsp goji berries
1 Tbsp ground flax
1 Tbsp chia
1/4" fresh turmeric
1/2" fresh ginger
1/4 tsp cloves
1/2 c oats
pinch of pepper
contents of a high quality green tea bag (I almost forgot!)
3 c water

TIME SAVER: I do NOT PEEL the beets, orange, turmeric, or ginger! Wash all produce well! You get a dash more fiber, and the big benefit, besides time, is that there is a lot of awesome stuff in that ORANGE PEEL, including cancer prevention, and flavor! Check out this nutritionfacts.org video CITRUS PEEL and CANCER: ZEST FOR LIFE?! And there are also a lot of great COMMENTS after the video with extra benefits of citrus peel!

I use the "whole juice" button on my Blendtec blender to blend everything together, and enjoy!

This is a lot of nutritious food, so you could have some for breakfast and then then the rest for a mid-morning snack (or share with a loved one!)!

Plus, cranberries, blueberries, cloves, oats, goji berries, flaxseed...you could probably make a full blog based entirely off of these ingredients! Hmmm, thank goodness for NUTRITIONFACTS.ORG!

If you enjoy LIKE on FB, and share with your family and friends :) Thanks! PS - I love sports nutrition!

Berry Berry Brownies

Who doesn't love BERRIES and BROWNIES? Well, actually, my hubby.  But I think he is in the minority! As you can see, I love this combo: All Things Chocolate and Berry! These are so yummy that I am having trouble catching them on camera! That's ok because they taste MUCH better than they look!

Berry Brownies
(Brownie Bites + strawberries)

1/2 c pecans
1/3 c dates
1/4 c unsweetened cocoa
dash of salt
4 fresh strawberries

Blend all ingredients in a food processor until it forms a "brownie batter" consistency. For each "brownie", just put a spoonful on a microwaveable dish and heat for 15 seconds. Hot berry brownie is ready to enjoy!

BONUS: your house will smell amazing!

3-Ingredient Super-Shake!

3-Ingredient Super-Shake

1 c almond milk (substitute non-dairy kefir* or other non-dairy milk)

¼ c chia seeds (read about healthy fat!)
1 c berries
Optional: 1/4 c unsweetened cocoa (click here for more chocolate and berry treats!)
Blend and enjoy!
*I haven't ever made my own non-dairy kefir, but here is a link if you want to try!

KEFIR is awesome! It has lots of vitamins, minerals, and protein! The best part-- it's loaded with HEALTHY BACTERIA! Have you heard of the health benefits of yogurt? Immunity, digestive, vaginal, and bladder health, and much more -- read here! Well, kefir can provide “yogurt benefits” much more POTENTLY, since it contains many different cultures, while some yogurts only offer one!

CHIA seeds are awesome! Jam-packed with nutrients and used for 1000s of years as a sports and energy staple! The coolest nutrition it provides is omega-3 fat: the thing that is so great about FISH, AND a nutrient in which 98% of the American population is deficient!   The seeds are teeny tiny, super cute, and you can add them to just about any food! This of course could be a whole other post too, but for now, just read this great article if you want to know more about chia! And/or read this book: Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Ever Seen by Christopher McGougall.

BERRIES are awesome! Full of ANTIOXIDANTS (a bit more here under #3), vitamins, sweetness, and flavor! You’ve probably heard all about them. They help your brain keep working well, and keep the cancer away! You can get them frozen and organic at Costco, for a fraction of the cost at another grocer, and frozen makes this drink really like a dessert! You can even eat it with a spoon if you eat quickly!

The finished product!

A very happy and satisfied taster!

TELL ME IN A COMMENT! Do you make smoothies? Do you add sugar/honey/juice? Have you tried skipping those sweeteners? What is your favorite flavor? What about adding veggies? Other powders, flax, wheat bran, powdered milk? Nuts/nut butters?
