Cranberry Toast Snack and Top 3 Reasons to Eat Cranberries

Cranberries are a superstar in the world of nutrition! Loaded with anthocyanins (the pigment in red, purple, and blue plants), they help our bodies stay and get back to awesome! In the lab, anthocyanins have been found to keep FAT from growing in the liver*, as well as protect us from CANCER in the liver, brain, colon, lung, mouth, ovary, prostate and stomach!

One great way to eat cranberries, is as a sauce -- try Tangy Sugar-Free Cranberry Sauce!

Here is a delicious snack:

Cranberry Toast Snack
Sprouted grain toast
Natural peanut butter or almond butter
Tangy Sugar-Free Cranberry Sauce

This contains about 5 Dr Greger Daily Dozen Checkmarks!
1) whole grain, 2) nut butter, 3) berries, 4) other fruit (orange, dates), and 5) cinnamon

Enjoy!

Did you know you have to eat 26 CANS OF CRANBERRY SAUCE (processed) to get the anthocyanins in ONE cup of whole cranberries? Tangy Sugar-Free Cranberry Sauce recipe calls for 3-4 cups of cranberries. That is as much anthocyanin as one might get from processed cranberry sauce in a whole lifetime (assuming one eats it just during the holidays...like most people I know)!

Cranberries are also one of the top ranked fruits in terms of antioxidants. There are almost as many antioxidants in cranberries, as there are in blueberries, and you would have to eat 5 and a half apples to get the amount of antioxidants there are in one cup of cranberries.

*Liver disease is more common than you might think. ONE IN THREE adults have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease :( Avoiding cholesterol and sugar may help to prevent this deadly condition, as well as consuming foods high in anthocyanins, like cranberries!

Awesome Avocado Quesadillas

These quesadillas are AWESOME!

I bought these tortillas a while ago (they seem to stay good forever!) and I couldn't decide how to use them, until I was PLEASANTLY SURPRISED with this combo!

You know AVOCADOS are awesome -- read why here!
Plus, Sprouted Corn Tortillas only have a very few ingredients! A SHORT ingredient list and HIGH fiber are often key to a good product! Sprouted Corn Tortilla Ingredients: organic sprouted whole kernel corn, water, salt, lime.

This is all you need:

Awesome Avocado Quesadillas

2 sprouted corn tortillas
1/2 an avocado

Heat a pan to medium-high heat. I use a non-stick ceramic pan. Place the tortilla on the hot pan.  Add avocado to center of tortilla. Mash second tortilla over avocado. After 1-2 minutes, flip quesadilla. Cut in pieces and enjoy!

These have a very AUTHENTIC Mexican taste! Dip in salsa. Great with a side of fresh tomato or red bell pepper slices! YUM!

BONUS TIP: red bell peppers have much more vitamin C than other colored peppers, such as orange, yellow, and green!

Sprouted corn tortillas, as well as other sprouted grain products, should be cooked this way, or toasted. Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe's, Heinen's, Giant Eagle (some), and even Marc's carry them. Here is a store locator: FIND SOME SPROUTED GRAINS NEAR YOU!

Tasty 2 Ingredient Snack!

Try plain avocado slices on Low-Fat Triscuits. This is a very SATISFYING snack. We often have it while waiting on dinner to be ready in the evening.  Try this HEALTHY FAT today!  Ever wonder why and which fat is healthy?

My kids even love the avocado in scoops without any crackers! They'll each eat half an avocado in a few quick minutes. It's awesome brain-food and it's easy and delicious too!

When you're BUYING an avocado, be sure that it's nice and firm. Let it sit out in your kitchen for a few days, so it softens and gives slightly to gentle pressure.

Once it is ripe, you can EAT IT or put it in the REFRIGERATOR until you are ready to eat it -- this is a trick to prevent further ripening. They'll stay perfect for up to two weeks! Avocados are too expensive to be throwing away!

Also, you'll want to prepare it just before you eat it, as it does quickly become oxidized upon being cut. Enjoy!

Here is another snack to enjoy: hummus and cucumber on toast!

3 Ingredient, Healthy, Late-Night Snack

Simply toast a bagel-thin (fiber-rich with only 100 calories per bagel).

Spread it generously with hummus, and top with cucumber slices! Whole wheat bread is the way to go!

Hummus contains the superfoods: beans (garbanzo), nuts (sesame seed paste called tahini), and garlic! The fiber, healthy fat, and protein combination will allow you to be satisfied without going wild with a huge late-night meal!

Try Heavenly Hummus!

These three nutrients: fiber, healthy fat, and protein should all be included in every meal! They help you feel full sooner and satisfied longer, and keep your blood sugar levels steady.

Regarding hummus, you can make your own cheaply, easily, and it's delicious and fresh! Or if you go to Costco, you could buy a large tub of it (shown in pic) for a better deal than at any grocery store. It tastes EXACTLY like our recipe, SO we have opted, lately, for the convenience option. The ingredients list is wonderful!

Or you could make these cutie-pie little sandwiches :)

TELL ME IN A COMMENT: DO you eat late night snacks? DO you always crave the same thing? Do you ever notice it's happened when you didn't eat much for dinner? I tend to get hungry if I stay up a lot later than usual, and over the holidays, I have been staying up much too late!

Larabars Rule!

Larabars are an amazing treat! I cannot say enough about these bars! They are jam-packed with nutrients and made completely from whole foods (fruit, nuts, and spices)! Most Larabars usually have an ingredients list you can usually count on one hand!

There are no preservatives, chemicals, artificial flavors, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, or anything other junky ingredients.

The cool part is that they are super-yummy and satisfying! It is hard to decide a favorite since they are all so delicious! I first found them at Costco, which is always impressing me with it's nutritious selection...though there are not available at Costco currently, unfortunately.

Ok, so Larabars are such a refreshing find! They are a convenient snack that you can keep with you where ever you go. They are high in vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and fiber! They're hip and trendy and mouth-watering!

Try one today and I promise you will not be disappointed! Ok, so if I have to pick, my favorite of the day is Chocolate Chip Cherry Torte! By the way, if you have a little time, and want to keep your money in your pocket book -- make them at home! Super easy and fun for kids! Here are a few recipes you can try! No-Bake Carrot Cake, Skinny Mints, PB&J Poppers.  Plus, a whole post called Learn about LARABALLS!

By the way, happily, today Larabars are widely available. Try some different flavors and try to pick a favorite! Then go to amazon.com's Subscribe and Save to buy a case, for less than anywhere I have ever seen! The www.amazon.com price is less than you can find locally, and then Subscribe & Save is an additional 15% discount. As soon as your order arrives, you may cancel your subscription with a quick click.
