Why NOT microwave popcorn? There are healthier choices among microwave popcorn options, but the plastic in microwave popcorn bags that makes them waterproof (same as in Teflon pans) has been associated with cancer and infertility. Also, the butter flavoring has been associated with lung problems for workers at microwave popcorn production plants.
I'm not suggesting you STOP eating microwave popcorn, especially if it is a favorite. Maybe though, you will think twice before eating multiple bags of it! Lots of things may "cause cancer", and you can't cut everything that may out of your life, but if there are food alternatives (really YUMMY ways!) that are less processed that you can work in to your life, why not give them a try?!
So how do I make it?
- Heat a pan (7 out of 9.5 works best on my cook top) for a few min (I set the timer for 2 min).
- Add some canola oil, just a light coat on the bottom of the pan.
- Then cover the bottom of the pan with a single layer of kernels.
- Cover pan and set timer for 2 min -- this timer helps me be sure not to burn my popcorn!
- Turn off heat when the popping really slows down, this is always within 2 min for me.
- Sprinkle with LIME juice, and any combination of pepper and/or salt, or the Aromatica Organics Garlic Pepper Seasoning.
- Stir it up and ENJOY!
When kids help, they are more likely to EAT anything you make together!
WHAT DO YOU THINK? Tell me in a comment -- did you eat popcorn as a kid? How did you make it? Air popper? Stir crazy? Jiffy pop? Microwave? Did you have a favorite flavor?

Hi Colleen - I applaud the idea of creating a safer home, and because there's so much misinformation out there about the Teflon® brand, I'm not surprised that you are concerned. I'm a representative of DuPont though, and hope you'll let me share some information with you and your readers so that everyone can make truly informed decisions.
Regulatory agencies, consumer groups and health associations all have taken a close look at the Teflon® brand. This article highlights what they found -- the bottom line is that you can use Teflon® non-stick without worry.

I'd truly be glad to share additional information about it if you are interested, and appreciate your consideration of this comment. Cheers, Sara.
Thank you for your comment, Sara. As I said, I eat microwave popcorn occasionally, and I wouldn't turn down someone's Teflon pan, if that's all they had to use, but I am on the better safe than sorry side. So, just like avoiding artificial sweeteners, products with lots of ingredients that are hard for children to pronounce, and plastic wrap in the microwave, I will also avoid Teflon and microwave popcorn, when I can, even if there is a study, or several, that say these things are safe enough to use. Have a nice day, and thanks for reading!
